Named Environmental Teacher of the Year by Monroe County Environmental Education Council in 2006, British born Nicky Laak worked as a journalist, chef, and paralegal before becoming a teacher. She is the head of Florida Keys Friends and Volunteers of Refuges' Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge volunteer organization and regularly volunteers at Crocodile Lake to protect endangered species. Currently, a teacher-librarian at the Academy at Ocean Reef, she and her husband have two children and live in Key Largo, Florida. A certified Wildlife Habitat Steward, award-winning illustrator Deb LaFogg-Docherty is a wildlife artist who volunteers for the Florida Keys Wildlife Refuges. A Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a member of Excellence of the Southeastern Pastel Society and an associate member of the Audubon Artists. She shows her work with numerous local art societies and in various gallery shows and museums around the country. Recently recognized by Wildlife Art Magazine and Wildscape Magazine, she gives talks about her trips into the field gathering reference for her up-coming paintings.
