Rachel Bard had written eight nonfiction books, from histories to travel guides, before taking up fiction. The heroine of her first historical novel, "Queen Without a Country," is Berengaria, wife of King Richard the Lionheart. In "Isabella" she examines the life of Isabella of Angoulême, who succeeded Berengaria on the English throne. Her next, "A Reed in the Wind," will star another medieval queen, Joanna, Queen of Sicily and sister of Richard and John. Research for her novels has taken the author to England, France, Spain, Italy, Sicily, Cyprus--the whole panorama of medieval Europe. She currently lives and writes on Vashon Island near Seattle.
