Marie, Ont., Under Government Auspices, in the Smelting of Canadian Iron Ores by the Electro-Thermic Process<br/><br/>A number of experiments required to be made to adjust the capacity of the crucible of the furnace to the energy available and to determine the shape to be given to the interior of the furnace to insure easy passage of the charge into the reducing and melting zones. After this, attempts were made to utilize the calorific energy of the caib'ou monoxide resulting from the reduction of the ore, which tn all experiments so far recorded had been wasted; To accomplish this air under pressure was introduced into the furnace about 12 inches below the upper level of the charge. The carbon of the. Charge, in the form of coke dust, was mixed with fire clay and briquetted to prevent it from being consumed by the air blast. It was hoped that by thus utilizing the carbon monoxide in preheating the charge and partially reducing the ore the output would be materially increased.
