RON CLEMENTS decided he wanted to be a Disney animator at the age of 9 after seeing a rerelease of Pinocchio (1940) at a local theater in his hometown of Sioux City, Iowa. In 1974, at the age of 20, he was accepted into the recently-established Walt Disney Animation Studios Talent Development program, working under the tutelage of some of Disney’s top animators. He went on to become an animator on The Rescuers (1977), Pete’s Dragon (1977), and The Fox and the Hound (1981); a storyboard artist on The Black Cauldron (1985); codirector The Great Mouse Detective (1986); and in creative partnership with longtime collaborator John Musker, cowrote and codirected The Little Mermaid (1989), Aladdin (1992), Hercules (1997), Treasure Planet (2002), The Princess and the Frog (2009), and Moana (2016).
Introduction
In the summer of 2017, just a few months after the release of Moana (the first one) our bosses at Disney, Ed Catmull and Andrew Milstein, met with John Musker and me to propose that the two of us write a book about Disney Animation history. The idea was to focus on the period following Walt s death in 1966, all the way to the 2010s. Ed, in particular, felt these were decades that had never been properly chronicled, and we seemed like good people to do it since we had lived through most of it.
John and I embraced the idea and, working with development executive Jessica Julius, set about conducting an extensive series of interviews as part of our preliminary research. We traveled from Los Angeles to Nashville, from Florida to New York, Boston and into Maine, interviewing almost two hundred people over an eight-month span. We talked to people we d worked with in the early 1970s who were part of Disney s newly installed Talent Development Program (which I was also a part of) and many renowned alumni of the CalArts Character Animation Program (which John was a part of). We talked to many who were at Disney during the big changes at the studio during the mid-1980s and who had experienced the exciting animation Renaissance period of the 1990s, followed by a dark time in the early 2000s, then another triumphant period under Ed and John Lasseter. All in all, we accumulated an overwhelming wealth of material.
But then, around February of 2018, before any writing had actually begun, John Musker decided to fulfill a lifelong ambition to make his own animated short film and retired from Disney. So it fell to me to take on this ambitious project all by myself. And as a result, the whole concept transformed. It ended up becoming less of a history book and more of a memoir. Less objective, more subjective and personal still telling the story of what happened during all those years, but emphasizing more what it actually felt like to live through it all to ride the roller coaster.
One of my biggest regrets about all this is that so much of the material accumulated through all those interviews did not make it into this book simply because there wasn t enough room and they weren t part of my own personal experience. Therefore, you won t read the many memorable and sometimes outrageous CalArts stories (anecdotes about design teacher Bill Moore could fill a volume by themselves) because I didn t go to CalArts. Even iconic events of those early years, like then studio head Ron Miller s legendary animation fishing trip, as well as the famous volleyball game between studio executives and animators (with control of the whole studio at stake!) were left out because I didn t fish or play volleyball. The many wonderful animated films that John and I did not work on during this time (like the feature films Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Frozen, to name a few) are covered, but only from the point of view of someone observing their goings-on from a distance. And though the book is still mostly about the movies we did, I also get into some of the trials and tribulations of my own personal life. Still, those two hundred interviews do exist, and hopefully can help contribute to many more books to be written in the future.
As far as this book goes, while it might be tempting to just dive in and start reading about the making of one of your favorite movies, like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog, or Moana, I would recommend reading the whole thing in order starting at the beginning, all the way through to the end. I think this is the best way to get a sense of the actual experience of the complete arc of my experience the adventure, the voyage, the journey, if you will. And though I ve tried very hard to be as ac
