This book examines the creation of the Bretton Woods system, which reorganized international monetary and financial order after the Second World War. Drawing on new archival research, this book provides a fresh analysis of the motivations of its principal architects, particularly the United States and Great Britain and to a lesser extent, the Soviet Union at an early stage. It explores why the British, initially suspicious of American monetary objectives, came to embrace the new system, thereby helping to create a new financial order centered on the dollar and the International Monetary Fund. At a time when the foundations of Bretton Woods are facing considerable strain, this book looks back at the system's origins to provide lessons for today.
