This fortification was, at successive periods, strength ened, by making the wall thicker on the outside of the first wall, until it became a place of very considerable strength. When the English took the place in 1664, the fort had 42 guns, which were 12 and 18 pounders, mostly brass, and very neatly cast.
Some of the settlements in North America were made by persons who fled from religious persecution; but the settlement at New York was made, primarily, for the purpose of trade. The first emigrants devoted them selves exclusively to traffic with the Indians, and with much success, as the following returns made to the Hol land Fur Company, evince.
