The Author, however, desires to advert briefly to the circumstances that impelled him to undergo the vast amount of hard, thankless, profitless labor which the preparation of a volume like this, however imperfectly executed, necessarily involves, and to assume the responsibility of an un dertaking, which, as an individual enterprise, unaided by munici pal or corporate favor, is, it is believed, wholly unprecedented.
