Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Authenticity of the So-Called First Meeting House at Salem, Mass

The site of the first meeting house was nearly the same as that occupied by subsequent buildings and is still the property of the religious society succeeding to the First parish in Salem.

No doubt during the pleasant weather of the summer of 1629 open air meetings sufficed, and the governor's great house or such other place as was convenient for so large an assembly as surely gathered on the Sabbath, may have met temporary requirements during inclement weather. But haste would have been made to provide suitable accommodations against the winter. The meeting-house would have been de signed to meet the requirements of the present and expected congregations. It has ever been that ecclesiastical structures are planned beyond the ability of completion at the expected time. That this was the case at Salem is probable. Carpen ters and all such found their services greatly in demand.
