Excerpt from The Old Kaskaskia Records: An Address Read Before the Chicago Historical Society, February 2, 1906
My own interest in Illinois history began about a year ago, when I was sent by the Illinois State Historical Library to report on an old French record in Belleville. In the St. Clair court-house has been preserved what is left of the Cahokia records, which have proved very valuable for the period following the conquest by George Rogers Clark; but of earlier date a record - book from the French period is all that remains.2 The mission to Belleville was so successful that the trustees of the Historical Library decided to send me into the field for a month last summer.
