Excerpt from New Essays Concerning Human Understanding
The portion of the New Essays thus published being favorably received by professors and students of philosophy in this country and in Europe, and being encouraged to go on and translate the entire piece, the work begun in 1885 was continued in leisure hours until in June, 1891, the translation was completed. Revision, annotation, and the labor of get ting it through the press have occupied the greater part of my free time since then. The annotation, which was not a part of the original plan, but which was found to be desirable, if not even necessary, as the sheets began to appear in type, has been the chief cause of the delay in the appearance of the book, the labor involved therein proving far greater and una voidably more protracted than was expected, the annotation also, as is frequent in such cases, growing with the progress of the book.
