The main Object which has been kept in View in the preparation Of this handbook is to furnish the members Of the British Association who are visiting Victoria with a brief account Of the physical conditions existing in the State, Of its natural resources and Of the steps which are being taken by the Government to develop these resources and to promote the well-being Of the people.

The introductory article is Of a comprehensive nature, and deals with a number Of practical problems in the State which await scientific solution. The Views expressed by the author have been given after consultation with a number Of experts in Government Departments and elsewhere. The second article contains information relating to the inhabitants Of Victoria, and shows their distribution as regards locality, age, nationality, race, &c. The immigration policy Of the Government is described in a Special chapter. Educational institutions are next dealt with, and this subject is followed by a description Of the public libraries, museums, and art galleries. In the succeeding section there is a full account Of the system Of local government, after which there is an article giving details of the public works which have been undertaken by the Government, the municipalities, and other public bodies, and showing the nature Of the difficulties which are met with in carry ing them out.
