This book presents the results of a five-year experiment to ascertain whether sustainable ranching practices can be developed in scrublands dominated by oak and other woody browse vegetation. It finds that while such areas can support cattle grazing, these lands must be managed much more conservatively than is common. Continuous grazing to fully utilize the oak quickly leads to overgrazing and deterioration of the rangeland.
