This book reevaluates the impact of alternate business performance specifications within strategy research, specifically goal-centered versus goal-independent perspectives. The author argues for a methodological approach anchored in relation to specific organizational goal structures. Historically, empirical studies have adopted a goal-independent perspective, despite strong arguments for considering organizational goal structures in the operationalization of performance. The author conducts a two-phased research design involving field and simulated data, finding strong support for the equivalence of the two perspectives. The conclusion highlights the importance of explicitly defining theoretical perspectives and measurement schemes to accurately evaluate the effectiveness of strategies within the field of strategic management.
