With the slight exceptions above mentioned, the present Volume is arranged on the same plan as its predecessors; it has been rather more compressed, and though it is very little larger than Vol. IX., it will be found to contain more matter, as is shewn by the greater length of the Indexes.

As usual a great number of names have been given during the progress of the work, and other communications have been received too late to appear, except in the Appendix, or in the Errata and Addenda, which are therefore of considerable length; but this defect is scarcely to be avoided in a work of alphabetical arrangement, of which the subject matter is in a constant state of progress.
