The salt springs near Jackson were utilized for the production of salt by the aborigines long before the advent Of the white man, as is shown by the remains scattered throughout the region. During the early history of the state this was one of the important localities for this article, which was carried by the early settlers on pack horses for long distances. Next, the region located in the rich Ferriferous ore belt became known for its charcoal furnaces. This was followed by the opening of the valuable Sharon and Quakertown coal deposits which increased the activity and wealth Of the region. At present, the county is of interest chie?y for its coals, clays, and iron ores.
