Excerpt from Gems of the Campaign of 1880
They did not believe in the possibility Of reunion. They had no knowledge of our military strength and did not believe in it; they looked upon our politi cal theory as a failure, and regarded the country as practically bankrupt.

You carried it successfully through its after period of exhaustion, and have brought it to its pres ent condition Of great and expanding prosperity.
Now, in this condition of assured tranquility and prosperity, our political opponents demand that you should turn over to them and place in their discretion the fruits Of your labor and the results Of your policy.
