A Pharmacopoeia is a book containing a selection of the most approved medicines, with directions for their prepara tion, or tests for their purity.

The British Pharmacopoeia - which was published first in 1864 - was made authoritative by Act of Parliament in 1862 - 3, and declared to supersede the Pharmacopoeias of the London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Colleges of Medicine. Since that time the national Pharmacopoeia has been re written in 1867 (with additions in and again in 1885 - additions to the last having been made in 1890.
