Excerpt from Building the Nation: A Study of Some Problems Concerning the Churches' Relation to the Immigrants

HE story of Canada gathers largely around the story of immigration. No factor has played a larger part in our national life from its very be ginnings. Within the last three decades, however, owing to the large influx from European and Oriental countries, it has become a question of the most vital importance, commanding the closest atten tion of governments, of labor unions, of economic and sociological organizations and of all our Churches. At the present time no question in our national life is fraught with larger issues - issues involving the very character and future welfare of our country. To this problem the Church has not and cannot be indifferent without being false to her mission. Apart from the message she brings and the service she renders, no adequate solution can be found. It is therefore imperative that our congregations, and particularly our young people, Shall be faced frankly with the problem and led to think through to their conclusions the many intricate questions that are involved.
