Excerpt from The Aerial World: A Popular Account of the Phenomena and Life of the Atmosphere
Plan which I proposed to myself in writing this was not to enter into minute details or learned disquisitions such as would be required in a Handbook of Meteorology. My less ambitious aim was merely to give a general view of the phenomena of the atmosphere, to point out the manifold relations between the aerial ocean and man, and to describe the life of which it is the ever busy scene. If after a perusal of its contents the reader should find his interest in the great pages of nature more keenly awakened than it may previously have been, and thus be led to deeper thought and further enquiry, I shall not consider as ill-spent the time and labour I have bestowed upon its composition.
