Excerpt from Observations on the Platform at Persepolis

The monuments dating from Old Iranian times are few in number, and among these few there is but little that can be regarded as specially the product of native Iranian genius. With the important exception of the pillared halls, a form of construction considered to have had its origin amongothe Medes, and with the further exception of certain architectural details, such as peculiar lintels and capitals, nearly everything that remains betrays the influence of the work of the neighbor and subject-nations on the west, - the peoples of the Euphrates and Tigris basin.
