Mf. Harrison was particularly useful as chairman of the board of war. After he resigned his legislative seat in 1777, he was elected to the house of Burgesses of Virginia and was immediately chosen speaker. He occupied this position until 1783 when he became chief magistrate of the State in the place of Governor Nelson who had resigned; he was twice reelected. In 1783, he retired to private life. This step proved to be only temporary, for in 1786, he became a member of the convention of Virginia that ratified the constitution of the United States. Of the first committee appointed by this body, that of privileges and elections, he was chosen chairman. His age and infirmities, however, prevented him from taking an active part in the debates. He advocated the adoption of the constitution with certain amendments. In all these dignified stations his conduct was decisive and beneficial to the country.
