Although written without thought of permanent publication and with no effort at orderly arrangement, the reader cannot fail to be struck by the vividness of the descriptions and the aptness of the language in these compositions. There are occa sioual sentences which haunt the mind like music. Mr. Durgin inherited from both parents a passionate love of Nature and a sensitive appreciation of its beauties; and he was endowed with the rarer gift of power to paint the scenes that he loved so well in a way to make eu during mental pictures for others.
