This book presents an in-depth analysis of a series of comparative tests conducted to assess the steam-producing capacities of various sizes of coal used in locomotive service. The tests were conducted by the author in collaboration with the International Railway Fuel Association and the United States Bureau of Mines. Various sizes of coal were burned in a Mikado (2-8-2) type locomotive under controlled conditions, and the results were carefully tabulated and analyzed. The book provides a wealth of data on the relative evaporative efficiencies, cinder losses, and heat transfer characteristics of the different coal sizes. The findings offer valuable insights into the optimal selection and use of coal for locomotive fuel, contributing to a more efficient and environmentally conscious railway industry.
