Excerpt from The Workaday Woman
Ittwas the last day of the old year. The day had been strangely quiet, quiet airs, quiet skies, quiet streets, but that was because the eve of the feast fell on a Saturday. Quiet people too, for I think that about this time a sort of remorseful tender ness comes over the bullies and the nagsters, so that they go about gently and deprecatingly, hoping by one day's record sweetness to outface the year's blusterings. One sees crusty old gentlemen bestowing pennies on non-begging children, sour Old maids tipping favoured crossing sweepers, and the children themselves playing quietly, hushed by the unusual sense of imminence that a purely arbitrary chronological arrangement, skilfully manipulated, can give.
