In de éénlettergrepigewoorden en de beklemtoonde eindletter grepen duidt de slot -e aan, dat de voorafgaande klinker lang is; in andere woorden wordt het aangeduid door den enkelen mede klinker, alhoewel men dit, in de gewone spelling, niet als zekere richtmaat kan beschouwen. (zie voorbeelden als habit.) In zulke woorden als be, my, go, zijn slot -e, -y, -0, ook regelmatig lang.
