Excerpt from Prescott
Mr. George S. Hillard, who wrote this essay in 1852, was a lawyer with a liking for letters. He was a personal friend of Mr. Prescott's, and such an admirer of the historian's work that when he published unsigned articles, people often said Prescott - and then was Mr. Hillard greatly pleased. His style is as broadly generous and calmly flowing as the Niagara just below the Falls: only a Lake Erie of words, and a cataract of ideas could supply it. And if he chose to speak of a man's mother as his im mediate maternal ancestor, or a boat ride as an aquatic excursion it surely was his legal right.
