This book examines 26 Old English charters dating from the 7th to the 10th centuries to determine the dialect or dialects represented in each text and to study the presence of foreign forms, specifically non-Kentish forms in Kentish charters. The author contributes an insightful look at the evolution of the Old English language during a period of political upheaval as the Germanic tribes settled England. Of particular note is that, unlike previous scholars, the author does not assume that forms found in a Kentish document are necessarily native to Kent; this new approach yields fresh insights into the complex linguistic landscape of early England.
