Excerpt from The History of Music, Vol. 5
Schumann and Mendelssohn are entitled to take the lead as composers of classical pianoforte music since Beethoven. Schumann employed his piano as a means Of expressing his most intense feeling, and we find that the first ten years of his career as a composer (1829 - 1839) were entirely devoted to pianoforte compositions. The results are his Papillons, Intermezzi.
