Excerpt from Notes on the Art of Rembrandt

These notes deal almost entirely with the problem of art education, and may thus be regarded as a supple ment (though their nucleus is of earlier date) to Notes on the Science of Picture-making. Portions of chapters iv, vi, vii, and viii have appeared in la Burlington Magazine. I am deeply indebted to the authorities of the Print Room at the British Museum for much help, and in particular to Mr. A. M. Hind, who generously placed at my disposal the proofs of his forthcoming critical work on Rembrandt's etchings. I have also to thank the Duke of Devonshire, Mr. Charles Ricketts, and Mr. Charles Shannon, Messrs. Colnaghi Obach, Messrs. Duveen Brothers, and the Carlton Galleries for permission to reproduce pictures and drawings. The subject-matter seems to fall so definitely within the scope indicated by the chapter headings as to render an Index in this case unnecessary.
