F aith grown up to confidence is, what the tower of Babel was not, built up to heaven, and fit to survive storm and deluge. What a sublime view from that high summit, if one were only there! How could we assuredly gather in the whole earth, and lay it at the feet of Christ! And then, descend ing to the plain of action, and buckling on the harness, full of the enthusiasm of the sight, with what joy and vigor should we strive to realize the heavenly vision! Would God the living Church might stand on that far height, and breathe the energy of such pure atmosphere, and kindle with the glory of a prospect so grand and godly! But now she does not look to the ends of the earth, and walk through all its borders with a faith, which gives every tribe unhesitatingly to the Lord, and knows, without a doubt, that the sceptre of Christ will be the sceptre of the world. She fears for the ark; she trembles for the throne of God. Christ indeed is mighty;but mightier yet, seems to feel, are the forces of sin. Strong is the eternal Word; but stronger yet, by her conduct, she seems to make her own suspicions of defeat. She is not confident of Christ, confident of her own destiny, confident of the love and promises of God. And through this weakness of faith it is, that money dribbles, and action falters, and duty sleeps. Through lack of confidence in cer tain victory, and a glorious issue to the sinful ages, the battle of the Lord is waged against heathen and infidel and hypocrite with so little heart, and such poor success, - poor, compared with the riches of possible and promised conquest. But we may look for new days speedily, new heavens and a new earth, when the whole Church shall truly say, and act to the word: Though a host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
