Another case in point is the purely physical transformation of the potential energy of gravity into the energy of electric transfer. The Des Coudres' cell,2 consisting of two mercury columns of differ ent height, joined by a solution of mercurous nitrate, the longer column being retained in position by a porous diaphragm, is another illustration of case one. The measurement of the emf in this arrangement is not very satisfactory, but the results are of the same order of magnitude as the calculated values. A single example will suffice.
