WE are all agreed that our English spelling is chaotic, and that there is an enormous expenditure of school time in the efforts of the teacher and children to overcome the difficulties. The spelling reformers are at work, but they are winning no relief for us. There is no doubt that the Simplified Speling Sosyeti is perfectly consistent in its suggestions, and that if we could decree a perfectly phonetic system we might just as well adopt their scheme forthwith. Yet, while we all recognize their earnestness and their consistency, and while we all acknowledge that they make out an unanswerable case for reform, we all, or nearly all, shrug our shoulders and dismiss them as mere dreamers. We receive their pamphlets in reformed spelling and we read them, but most of us, alas! For the joke of the thing. Why If we are really suffering from the anomalies of our spelling, ought we not rather to praise them and back them up in their efforts I believe that the reason of our indifferent attitude lies in the feeling that their scheme is so revolutionary that it cannot possibly succeed. They fail in their efforts because they are attempting too much at once. The reform of our spelling must be by evolution not by revolution. We must be content to take a few steps at a time.
