Among the vast number of Elementary Works intended for the Student of the German Language, there is, strange to say, scarcely one that is sufficiently easy for Beginners.

Though for the most part consisting of Selections from the best Authors, and so far shewing that the. Compilers had read much, these publications, by their utter want of method, have too frequently proved rather a stumbling block than a help to the study of the Language.

The present compilation, by its strictly inductive proc'ess, so to Speak, is designed to lead the Student from the A B C of the German Language and Literature up to the understanding of the highest works by which they are adorned.
