Excerpt from Der Schimmelreiter: Novelle
The scene of the story is laid on the west coast of Schlee wig near Husum, the author's native town. The actors are only Frisian peasants; but, while' actors and action are local and homely, they present types and truths that are universal and eternal. The pervading tone is as invigorating as are the breezes from that North Sea mentioned so frequently in the text.
