So many spurious editions have been made of the Key to these exercises, that, after having carefully examined all of them, I consider myself bound to state, that the pretended translators of my exercises, hoping to avoid detection, have so mutilated the genuine German expressions of my Method, and introduced so many incorrect sentences, that, far from assisting the learner in his study, those exercises are calculated to make him adopt erroneous principles of German. In fact, they have nothing in common with my exercises but the title, and any one possessing a know ledge of German will soon, in looking into them, discover that they are impositions.

IT is hardly necessary to premise that this work is de signed for the use of those who purpose studying without the aid of a master. The rules Of grammar are so clearly explained, and accompanied by examples in such gradual progression, in my German Method, that the exercises by which they are followed generally present very little difficulty to pupils, who seldom make faults in them. Nevertheless, it is possible they should make some; and even granting their exercises to be perfect, they may still be diffident and uncertain as to their success. The present work is for the purpose of setting them right when they have made a mistake, and also of assuring them when their compositions are correct. But it is not only to satisfy a real want that I have undertaken this publica tion: there have been so many demands for the corrected exercises of my Method, that I felt called upon to bring this new work before the public; and should it prove an additional service to the study of the German Language, and deserve a portion of the approbation which public opinion has already expressed in favour of my former efforts, I shall be amply rewarded.
