His first care was the temple. He pulled down the hateful Syrian altars, rooted up the shrubs that filled its courts, rebuilt its walls and hung them with the splendid spoil of the heathen, and with pious care rededicated the altars to Jehovah. With great rejoicings and solemn Ceremonies the Israelites set up again the worship for which they had endured so much and fought so bravely; and then for the first time celebrated with illuminations and festive dances the beautiful Feast of Lights.
