The editor has not hesitated to write many letters of inquiry as to the special value and acceptation of Spanish words, and to consult personally also native Spaniards and spanish-americans. It has been his aim to secure accuracy at what ever cost. But it has been found impracticable to change all the Linnaean names of plants and animals to the most modern equivalents. The men of science will pardon this shortcoming in a popular treatise. The botanical and zoological terms have frequently given much trouble to interpret aright.
