This literary collection is the second volume of a three volume set of geographical explorations of Scotland, gathered by Walter Macfarlane. Macfarlane himself contributed nothing but rather gathered the works of prominent scholars of the era and excerpted descriptions and accounts out of other works. The primary sources for the descriptions of shires, towns and parishes were notes made by Timothy Pont, Sir Robert Sibbald, Sir Robert Gordon, and James Gordon. While this volume was being assembled, Blaeu was gathering many of these same sources and contributions for his Atlas Novus, but this book provides a collection of writings that did not make it into Blaeu's work. It also offers insight into the many sources that were utilized and provides context to the competing claims of priority for the first comprehensive survey of Scotland.
