Goethe would show us that this idea is directly at vari ance with all that can be observed in Nature and Man of the laws and sequences which govern the course of existence. He would make it evident that disbelief in a Controlling Power of life, and the consequent idea of an unlimited freedom to pursue happiness as an aim in itself, is a fatally destructive mistake; from which error most of the miseries of mankind can be shown to arise.

The present r�sum� of a more extended epitome of all that Goethe has said or written on the subject dealt with in his Faust, is called Goethe's Key to Faust, because it confines itself to that Author's own exposition of the poem; which he said directly was intended to enable his readers to solve the enigmas of their own lives, and to furnish them with a scientific basis for a rational religious belief.
