Portions of three very important Apocryphal books have been added to the volume. The first book of Maccabees is an essential part of Israelite history; and no adequate idea can be gained of the Wisdom literature without some acquaint ance with the book of Ecclesiasticus and the Wisdom of Solomon.

The text of this volume is that Of the Revised Version, amended by the use of many of the marginal readings. The Revisers of the Old Testament, as is well known, placed a great deal of their most valuable work in the margin. There, in hundreds of cases, are to be found correct translations. While the old errors remain in the text. But, so placed, they are almost useless to the ordinary reader, since the margin also contains hundreds of wrong translations, which were found in the Authorised Version, and rejected by the Revisers; and no indication is given which of these marginal renderings are right and which are wrong. The editor has obtained permission from the authorities of the Oxford and Cambridge Presses to introduce into the text such of the Revisers' marginal renderings as are now generally admitted to be correct.1 He gratefully acknowledges their courtesy; and he believes that every careful reader will be conscious of an immense gain, both literary and religious.
