Excerpt from The Colonel's Diary: Journals Kept Before and During the Civil War
As commander of a company, and later of the regiment, Colonel Jackson carried a note book in his pocket, and during the halt on the march or the lull between charges in the battle, he made notes of the events taking place within his obser vation. He does not give a history of what is in the past, but paints a moving picture in words, of a soldier's experience in the camp, on the march and in battle, and makes the reader feel that he is present in the stirring scenes he records.
