The special value of the French series noticed above lies in the fact that each envoy, when he proceeded on his mission, was furnished with a review of previous relations with the court to which he was accredited. These illuminating recitals the British instructions lack. The want should be supplied by the full reports which the envoys were ordered to make on their return to England, but very few of these, if they were rendered at all, appear to have been preserved.
