The Title of this Volume defines its subject; and the subject, it.is presumed, explains its object. The Author, however, desires to advert brieflyto the circumstances that impelled him to undergo the vast amount of hard, thankless, profitless labor which the preparation of a volume like this, however imperfectly executed, necessarily -involves, and to assume the responsibility of an un dertaking, which, as an individual enterprise, unaided by munici pal or corporate favor, is, it is believed, wholly unprecedented.
