Through these individual stories, the author reveals the broader social and historical context in which the Candees lived. Beyond its genealogical value, this book explores the enduring legacy of the Candee family. It examines the themes of family bonds, perseverance, and the pursuit of a better life. The author argues that the Candees' story offers valuable insights into the human experience and the power of family history to shape our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.

William L. Candee, Esq., of Milwaukee, says in refer ence to the name (march, 1879 I early wrote my name with one 6. In 1814, I was a Surgeon in the army sta tioned at New York, where many pronounced my name Hand; and to oblige them to make two syllables of it, I added an extra 6. I think my cousin, Sheldon Candee, did the same. He met, some years since, a gentleman of Dutch descent, whose ancestors went from France and to the Huguenots. He considered the name Cande the same as that of his ancestors.
