In the preface to the first edition was fully set forth the origin of this work; As there explained, a consider able portion Of Part I, relating to Banks of Deposit and Discounts, was derived from the Bankers' Commonplace Book, a work written by an experienced bank officer and possessing great merit. Since his day, however, many changes have been introduced into banking, and his work, though still worth reading, does not adequately deal with the conditions that now confront the banking world. So, nearly all taken from that work has been omitted, except a part of the chapter relating to the duties of the president and a few paragraphs pertaining to directors and discounting.

Most of the chapters in Part II, treating of savings banks, were written by Mr. Charles E. Sprague, president of the Union Dime Savings Institution of New York, and these have been revised by him and contain, it is believed, every idea in the best savings bank practice.
