Several of the poems in this volume were first published in the Knickerbocker Magazine of New York, during a period extending from 1850 to 1853, when the author was a contributor to that magazine, which was edited by Louis Gaylord Clark. Others appeared from time to time many years ago in difi'erent literary periodicals of the day. They are now collected for the first time, and with the addition of a few productions of later date.
