A pioneering work in the field of shorthand, this book presents the author's own innovative system, widely used by phonographers and reporters in the Pacific Coast region. From its inception as a series of lessons in a magazine to its final form as a comprehensive manual, the system has been refined and perfected over decades. By incorporating a progressive system of exercises, the author has greatly enhanced the accessibility of shorthand, a tool indispensable in capturing the spoken word. Beginning with the fundamentals of the shorthand alphabet and progressing to more advanced concepts like phrasing and reporting techniques, this book provides a thorough foundation in phonography. Beyond its practical applications, the book holds historical significance as one of the earliest and most successful shorthand systems. By unlocking the secrets of shorthand, this book empowers the reader to document the rapid flow of human speech, making it an indispensable tool for journalists, legal professionals, and anyone who needs to accurately record the spoken word.

Excerpt from Marsh's New Manual of Reformed Phonetic Short-Hand: Being a Complete Progressive Guide to the Best System of Phonography and Verbatim Reporting
Mr. Marsh's first work on shorthand, given to the public a number of years ago, is conceded by all phonographers acquainted with it to be the best ever published, and three-fourths, at least, of all the profession on the Pacific Coast use his System.
When first issued its sale was limited, and when the edition was exhausted, prices of $10 to $20 each were freely offered for second-hand copies.
Upon the occasion of the fire which destroyed our publishing house in 1886 the second edition of Marsh's Manual was consumed. The demand, how ever, for the publication is so great that The Bancroft Company have decided to issue a third edition, and they now offer to the public a much finer and more accurate Manual than either of its predecessors.
