As he was driving up to the fence, and while turning his team, old Tobe, the line horse, who had lived so long and become so wise that he would take advantage of every little privilege allowed horses, put his left hind foot over one of the traces; and while the boy was right ing the gears, he heard the rattle of wheels coming up the road which bordered this side of the field. Looking up he saw a gentleman in a buggy driving a high-mettled horse with flowing mane and tail.

As he came within speaking distance this gentleman drew rein and inquired: Can you tell me, my son, where Mr. Deek lives?
