Excerpt from Corporations, Vol. 2 of 2: A Study of the Origin and Development of Great Business Combinations and of Their Relation to the Authority of the State
Middle Ages bequeathed to the modern world those of the English universities have proved to be most enduring, have suffered the least change in response to the demands of modern life. The study of university history on its formal side is therefore less difficult after than before the end of the fifteenth century and may be disposed of with some degree of brevity. For the sake of convenience, the second period may be considered under the three heads already used in connection with other subjects: (1) Relations to the State, (2) Relations to the Church and (3) Internal relations, - though the facts included under the second heads were more or less completely merged with those under the first head after the Refor mation and may not always be easily distinguished or distributed.
