This book is a fierce condemnation of the violations of the constitution and law that were being carried out in the name of saving the Union. While it recognizes the right of States to secede for just cause, the author points out that the secession of the Southern States was based on the false premise that any State had the unilateral right to secede, and that the South's secession violated the Constitution and the laws passed by Congress under the authority granted by the Constitution. The author also argues that the war for the abolition of slavery was a war against the Union, the constitution, and the laws, since the government had no right to wage such a war except under the authority granted by the Constitution and the laws passed under the authority granted by the Constitution.
